14 Dec Entrepreneur’s list of 10 Things Your Small Business Website Needs
I came across this article from 2010 on Entrepreneur titled “10 Things Every Small-Business Website Needs“. I thought, hmm I wonder if this may be dated since it was written more than 5 years ago. Turns out, the essential things for a small business website are still generally the same. Perhaps design trends have changed, but more or less, the ways that people are looking for small businesses, using their sites, and the strategy for the businesses to help people find them on the web haven’t changed much, if at all.
I think the only thing I would add that really has changed in the past 5 years is that a small business website should absolutely be mobile responsive, meaning it is adaptable for viewing and use on a mobile device, not just a desktop/laptop computer browser. The use of cell phones to access the internet has proliferated and if your site doesn’t look good or work well on a mobile device, a lot of your site visitors won’t have a good a experience.
Here’s a summary of their list of must haves for a small business website. Take a look at the full article and see if you agree:
- A clear description of who you are
- A simple, sensible Web address
- An easily-navigated site map
- Easy-to-find contact information
- Customer testimonials
- An obvious call to action
- Know the basics of SEO
- Fresh, quality content
- A secure hosting platform
- A design and style that’s friendly to online readers
