Google: Mobile REALLY Important for Search Rankings

Google’s Announcement

Google has announced that they are “expanding its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal”, which, in layman’s terms means that a site that is mobile-friendly will help it show up higher in Google searches.

Here is their announcement: https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/6196932?hl=en

Why mobile matters

Why does it matter so much? There is a huge trend of people starting to use the web more on their devices than on their desktops. This means that a large percentage of  your customers are likely accessing your site from their phone or tablet. If the experience you provide in those smaller screens is not good, the chance of them leaving is high. Google is likely hoping to push businesses large and small to make sure that they provide good experiences for everyone on mobile.

Tools

And in typical Google fashion, to support their focus on encouraging people to make their sites mobile friendly, Google has released a very simple tool for you to check whether your site would pass their test. Their test tool can be found here. Simply enter any website URL, and in about 30 seconds, Google will let you know your mobile usability score according to how their bot reads your website.

This is what it looks like after I’ve entered this website into the tool (we got an A+):

Search is very important for all businesses, but especially small businesses. It is a key way to get “found” by potential customers because you’re capturing them as they’re actively looking for something that is relevant to your brand. So make sure that you are not hurting your opportunity to be found by having a site that isn’t mobile optimized.

At First Days Digital, we only  build mobile-optimized websites. Every client website we’ve built is “responsive” which means that they resize automatically across many different device sizes. This is especially important nowadays that everyone’s computer screens, tablet screens and cell phone screens are different sizes.

If you have any questions about whether your site is optimized for search or for different devices, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
